WATCH: These Heroic Texans Will Make You Proud To Be An American

On Saturday, Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, claiming at least five lives and leaving hundreds of thousands without power. The hurricane, which has since been downgraded to a tropical storm, has unleashed unprecedented flooding in Houston. In that city alone, 30,000 people are expected to seek shelter and 450,000 will require disaster assistance of some kind, according to CNN.

The devastation and destruction also inspired the fine people of Texas to help their neighbors, some of whom performed heroic acts that demonstrate true Americanism.

“We’re going to save some more lives, the spirit of Texas. That’s what it’s about,” said one man, standing alongside another man ready to take on the flooded streets.

More men, packing up their boats, tell a reporter that they are “gonna save some lives.”

Other Texans were reportedly using air mattresses and kayaks to help their neighbors

A local preacher took on the flood waters, heroically swimming from car to car to check if people were trapped inside who needed rescuing.

According to a report from Reuters, a local civilian named Zachary Dearing, 29, took charge of a desperate situation in Rockport, Texas:

[Dearing] recruited 15 volunteers – most between the ages of 16 and 21 – and put them on 30-minute shifts checking on everyone inside, particularly the most frail. He got people in the shelter to pool their food and water so that all could be fed. He got the team to plug leaks from the driving rain as best they could. And he organized periodic trips into the Category 4 wind storm to rescue more stranded people, according to Dearing, the state officials and others in the shelter.

Other local rescue workers did all they could to help rescue civilians.

The people of Texas, civilians and emergency rescue personnel alike, stepped up to help their neighbors — no matter their political beliefs, their religion, or their skin color — in their time of need. A true reminder on what makes America great.
